To me, baseball ranks #1 and no other sport or form of competition is even worth considering. There is no #2.

I never, never understand why so many people think that "baseball fan" must equate to "sports fan". One is a subset of the other but they are distinctly different things.

The way to make baseball as popular as cricket is to withdraw all media credentials, contract about 20 of the 30 major league teams (especially the Yankees), and change the starting times of games to 3:20 am, played in uncut grass fields out behind the warehouse with no seating and plenty of chiggers. By candlelight.
References :
Baseball is probably either #5 or right around it. It is mainly helped by the fact that two large countries (U.S. and Japan) play the game.

In order for baseball to become as popular as other sports, baseball players and fans (yes even we should be obliged to do this) have to spread the game to other countries. Yes they play baseball in Latin America, but they also play cricket and soccer. The problems really come with the fact that baseball is an American sport, and many countries, for political or other reasons, do not appreciate American sports. Its up to players and fans to convince these people that this is a great game and you should play. But it will be a very hard task to accomplish.
References :
Avid baseball fan.

Gotta imagine that it outranks Cricket.

Just look at all the countries that eat, breath, and sleep the game. Baseball is almost as huge as soccer in Latin & S. Americas. Probably ranks higher in the Far East.
